police learned that a shooter was inside the school. just about an hour later at 10:45 we heard the first reports of multiple victims and as we've been reporting most of them we later learned were children. around 11:00 a.m. we began hearing reports that one of the dead was the gunman. the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary is bringing back grim memories of other school shootings. in 1999 two students opened fire at columbine high school in littleton colorado killing a dozen classmates and teachers before turning the gun on himself. another gunman killed himself at the virginia tech campus and killed 33. and earlier this year, a gunman shot and killed several people at oikos university. that man is now in jail. we have comments from some of the family members of the the oikos shooting. >>> and law enforcement sources say at least three guns were found at the shooting scene. two pistols were found inside the school. one was a glock. a three 234 caliber rifle was at a car parked at that school. that car is said to belong to the gunman's mother. the debate over guns flairs up every

of them closed at 2:30 and don't include a full days that one does. so i think there is no question that there is a need. and they would be principaled permitted at 15 or below and they are only going for five more children, which is why they are before us today. so i think there is a lot of potential for this. and i agree that i really like the university mound in the district. i know it very well having raised kids in the city and playing games over there, particularly at st. elizabeth, which is unfortunatialy closed right now, but archdiocese continuing re-opening it. i appreciate all the testimony by the various neighbors and the opposition, but i don't see how the impact should be that great. you are talking about 20 children. they are going to be dropped off, presumably, about 8:00 a.m., maybe a little bit before or after and then picked up, most of them in the late afternoon about 4:30 or 5:00. and and i don't think having a school in an area necessarily degrades property values. my kids went to st. brendons and the school was built much later than the houses. and their prope

inside an elementary school there. first, we have the latest time line emerging from the tragedy at about 9:30 a.m. classes begin at the sandy hook elementary school. it's known as one of the state's top schools. some teachers and faculty members were gathered in the main office for a meeting about five minutes later they hear gunshots and duck under tables. the school's principal dawn hocksprung is her name and school psychologist confront the gunman and become the shooter's very first victims. before she was killed, the principal likely saved many lives there by turning on the school's loud speaker so that everyone could hear and that everyone could take cover in that school. shortly after, the first 911 call started. >> police arrived within minutes. at 10:23 they enter the school and go room to room. they confirm that the shooter is dead. and they start moving children from harm's way. >> frantic parents and loved ones then started to rush to the scene and then later that day, after rewe realized the magnitude of that shooting. at 3:17 president obama talking about this as he wi

. secretary, but i did spend the night at marine's memorial club so i think i'm able to fill in okay. as general my dsz at said, i've had the p opportunity to purpose in fleet week over the last several years. my attention and focus has been, obviously, from the first marine expeditionary forces perspective and our close partnership, the third fleet and expeditionary strike group 3 in supporting fleet week. clearly filling in for admiral roughhead i'm going to have to elevate my comments and move to a little bit different level. the department of defense is very comprehensively represented here at fleet week this year, more so than ever before. we have a representative from the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and american security affairs in the audience and they were here in august when we did our exercise with the city. fema is well represented and we have several defense coordinating officers here over the past couple of days. certainly the california national guard is represented heavily here. obviously they are going to be the first guys to respond to a disaster

who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled him a suspect. but he was taken away in handcuffs. his brother adam died at the scene. but police are not saying at this point if he killed himself. police did say that they did not discharge any of their weapons and yet he was dead on the scene. law enforcement sources also telling cnn that the shooter in this horrible tragedy was dressed in "black battle fatigues an

six adults at the school. including the school's principal and sky psychologist. the suspect is 20-year-old adam lanza. sources say he was armed with three guns, wore fatigues and had a military vest on. he got the guns from his mother. all five guns were registered to her. and she was found dead in her home not far from where we are right now. parents and teachers, i think it is fair to say the entire nation is struggling with how to really understand how a gunman could open fire on a bunch of small children at an elementary school. so we wanted to have a conversation about how to have that conversation. dr. eric fisher is a licensed clinical psychologist, an expert on post-traumatic stress disorder. dr. fisher, i appreciate you talking to us. just a few moments ago i talked to a first and third grader. and one of the things they said to me is they don't really know what to do. they have been letting the kids dictate how much they talk or how much not to talk, but now that they know some of their first graders' best friends have been massacred, they just don't know what to do. wha

imaging tests are the most appropriate, are at the right dose, especially for kids are a lot of times, they don't know how to scale down for a child-size body and the machines may not calibrate or have clear directions on how to make that happen so in our own lives, we can ask our health care provides, are there safer alternative, mri or ultrasounds for doing this test, and then if you have kids and they need a test, ensure and ask questions about the safest dose and if they have machines that can calibrate to kids, and then we have to see these changes with the laws so if fda has proposals out for medical imaging around kids so you know how to downsize a radiation dose for kids who is smaller, their physical size is narrower, and also to make machines more accountable and more clear in how they work. >> [inaudible]. >> it's very low doses but that's an excellent question and i thought somebody would probably ask that. so, the united states preventative services task force in 2009 came out with a proposal to revise guidelines saying that perhaps women aged 40 to 50, there's no cost be
